Why Do Monsteras Have Holes (??)
Why Do Monsteras Have Holes? is a sound and performance art piece first performed at CPR (Center for Performance Research) that explores the sacred, erotic, and evolutionary intelligence of the Monstera deliciosa. This perverted performance lecture blends scientific observation with somatic inquiry, asking: What does it mean to be full of holes and still thrive? Why do some plants perforate themselves to survive, to breathe, to catch light?
Through voice, soundscape, and embodied gesture, I trace the Monstera’s fenestrations as both survival mechanism and metaphor—an invitation to reconsider how absence, rupture, and openness might be forms of power. Merging eco-eroticism with speculative botany, the piece wonders aloud if holiness and hole-ness are kin. What other creatures, like us, live and love through the gaps?
